1.Purpose

UNC Greensboro strives to provide an appealing, welcoming campus environment with informative wayfinding.  Monitoring and controlling campus signage are essential elements in our University master plan, living and learning environments, and brand identity.

2.Scope

The following are covered by this policy:

  1. Major campus perimeter announcement signs, whether permanent or temporary.
  2. Permanent and temporary announcement signs in interior areas of the campus.
  3. Signs and banners hung from light, power, and telephone poles.

Any permanent signage erected under this policy will conform to the University Communications Guidelines, as currently adopted and as may be changed from time to time.

Note that single event announcement signs designed similarly to real estate signs, placed along campus walkways and streets before and removed after events do not require prior approval. However, banners to be hung on or inside buildings announcing specific activities and programs require approval of the individual responsible for that building.

The definition of a “sign” includes the structure required for its display.

3.Definitions; Roles and Responsibilities

3.1Definitions

3.1.1Major campus perimeter announcement signs:

These are signs located on the major campus perimeter of Market, Boyd, and Tate Streets and Oakland Avenue as well as Spring Garden Street. Such signs may be permanent and used to announce a variety of University activities or temporary with a purpose of announcing a single event.

3.1.2Announcement signs in interior areas of the campus:

These are signs located within the interior of the campus, on or outside of buildings, and may be either permanent and used to announce a variety of University activities or temporary in nature with a purpose of announcing a single event.

3.1.3Signs and banners hung from light, power, and telephone poles:

These are signs hung on brackets from light poles along perimeter and internal streets to the campus. These signs must comply with existing City of Greensboro regulations as well as those of the appropriate utility company. They are generally displayed for a designated period of time based on appropriate regulations.
