1.Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to provide an inclusive and welcoming environment for all members of the University Community.
2.Scope
This policy applies to all members of the University Community and to all University Publications.
3.Definition and Roles and Responsibilities
3.1Definitions
3.1.1Gender-Inclusive Terms
“Gender-Inclusive Terms” means writing that does not identify a particular sex, gender, or gender identity and does not perpetuate gender stereotypes. Examples include, but are not limited to, chair, first-year student, and upper-level student.
3.1.2University Community
“University Community” means all The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (“University” or “UNC Greensboro”) faculty, staff, and students.
3.1.3University Publications
“University Publications” means the preparation and issuance of written University materials. Examples include, but are not limited to, documents, handbooks, announcements, catalogs, magazines, websites, and policies.
3.2Roles and Responsibilities
Deans and Vice Chancellors are responsible for ensuring policies within their purview use Gender-Inclusive Terms. Deans and Vice Chancellors should work to update their existing University Publications to be consistent with this policy.
4.Policy
UNC Greensboro is committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all members of the University Community. Consistent with that commitment, University Publications should be gender inclusive.
5.Compliance and Enforcement
Instances of noncompliance with this policy should be referred to the relevant Dean or Vice Chancellor for corrective edits.
