1.Purpose

Student Internships and practicum occur in a variety of settings and disciplines at the University. Acquired through the Office of Institutional Risk Management, UNCG has procured a University Student Intern Liability Policy,(“Insurance Policy”) which is intended to protect students, while in performance of course activity, from liability claims for actions or alleged actions from third parties that arise during the course of the course-required Internships or Practicum.

2.Scope

This policy applies to all full and part-time UNCG students, undergraduate and graduate, participating in an internship or practicum as a requirement in their course or curriculum.

3.Definitions

Student Intern – A student who is engaging in paid or unpaid internships that are sponsored, authorized, or approved by UNCG for course credit.

Internship – A pre-professional work experience that provides students with the opportunity to gain experience in a particular career field related to the student’s major or career interests.

Practicum – An individual project-based course wherein the student writes a project proposal, executes the project and reports on his or her progress throughout, under appropriate supervision.

Professional Liability – Legal obligations arising out of a professional’s errors, negligent acts or omissions during the course of the practice of his or her craft.

General Liability – Liability due to damage or injury caused by negligence or acts of omission, during performance of his or her duties or business.

4.Policy

While participating in required internships or practicums for credit, students must purchase the Intern Liability Insurance Policy, which provides professional and general liability coverage. A minimal fee will be attached to the student’s account upon registering for a student teaching, practicum or internship class. This fee will cover the cost of the premiums for the insurance coverage. This insurance policy has $2 Mil per incident and $4 Mil aggregate limits and a $0 deductible. If the student already has liability coverage from memberships to organizations that include it or privately purchased insurance, the fee may be waived by providing documented proof of coverage to the Office of Institutional Risk Management.

The professional liability insurance provides coverage for an insured party (in this case, the UNCG student) who becomes legally obligated because of any act, error or omission in the rendering of or failure to render professional services in conjunction with an internship.

The general liability insurance will pay those sums on behalf of an insured party (in this case, the UNCG student) who becomes legally liable to pay damages because of property damage, bodily injury or personal injury because of their participation in a university internship program to which the policy applies.

The minimum liability limits of acceptable coverage are $1 Mil per occurrence and $3 Mil aggregate.

Major exclusions to this coverage:

  • Intentional Acts
  • Liquor Liability
  • Pollution Liability
  • Automobile Liability
  • Your property or property of others in your care, custody, or control
  • Employment Practice Liability
  • Physical Assault, Abuse, or Molestation

5.Enforcement

6.Review

This policy will be reviewed every five years or more frequently, as needed.
